Heavy Construction Has a World Changing History

Nowadays, the consequences of heavy construction is all around us with super high rise buildings at every block in every city. However, the history of heavy construction and the equipment used during the wise is long and deep. So much so, that there is an entire non - profit organization set up to preserve the history of the construction equipment that changed and shaped our world.

The Historical Construction Equipment Association is jog by antsy staff members who preserve the history of the construction industry. Additionally, they preserve the history of the dredging and surface mining industries, their applications and types of equipment. The Historical Construction Equipment Association operates the Governmental Construction Equipment Museum in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Museum preserves and displays historic literature, photographs, business records, and much more for manufacturing companies from the 1870s to today.

The importance of having a museum like this is to protect what would single become diverse of ill-fated down and unavailable pieces of heavy construction equipment. These would normally be dismantled for the parts, used for scrap metal or decent single to the elements. As well, the administrative and sales records of the company is often thrown out to avoid being experimental by the public and to stop researchers from reviewing them. Recurrently times, they are kept within family collections to protect and preserve them. This is why it ' s so important to organize a museum that allows the public to discover this answer piece of our history.

Since 1992, The Public Construction Equipment Museum has rented a piece of unlocked land in Bowling Green, Ohio that offers public displays of the historic machinery, exhibits and other artifacts. The collection has over fifty pieces of equipment that are representative of the development and history of the construction industry. In all, the artifacts and equipment will take you through the industry from the 1800 ' s to the mid 1960 ' s.

There is stable a section of the Museum where volunteers restore machines to working order and revive their origin appearance and condition. The volunteers are not all from the construction industry, although they do share a passion for heavy construction machinery. At this point in the Museum ' s development, there are over 2, 600 manufacturing companies represented by either artifact, record or piece of equipment.

Also, the heavy construction industry has many branches and businesses it affects. Many of these affiliate companies can be identified through the Museum ' s collection that includes truck and trailers, attachments, engines and components, mining contracts, dealers and auctioneers, non - profit organizations and even government agencies. Many of the archived companies span from the 1870s to the present day, including major collections of records from the Marion Power Shovel Company, Euclid, Volvo Construction Products, Clark Equipment Company, Austin - Western, the Cleveland Trencher Company and many more.

The Marion Power Shovel Company has a long history and was one of the first large manufacturers who designed, manufactured and sold heavy construction equipment. These machines included steam shovels, excavators and dragline excavators for the construction and mining industries. The Marion Power Shovel Company was founded in Marion, Ohio in August, 1884 by Henry Barnhart, Edward Huber and George W. King as the Marion Steam Shovel Company. Edward Huber was in fact a noted and extremely well respected inventor and industrialist of the time.

Long before he helped to create the Marion Steam Shovel Company he had invented the " revolving hay rake " that was patented in 1863. It improved the speed and efficiency of harvesting hay immeasurably and he went on to invent many more tools and agricultural implements which were very popular. Huber also began to build and sell affordable steam tractors which was the precursor to the heavy construction machine known as the steam shovel. Huber was also one of the first to produce modern gasoline powered tractors.

The company grew and changed dramatically through the decades and went from the Marion Steam Shovel Company to the Marion Power Shovel Company in 1946 to reflect the company ' s and the industry ' s change from steam power to diesel power. However, before that it should be noted that the Marion Steam Shovel Company supplied nearly all the heavy construction machinery for the building of the Panama Canal near the turn of the 20th century.

The Marion Power Shovel Company was eventually sold and became the Marion division of Dresser Industries, Inc. in 1976. It was then put up for sale in 1997 and Bucyrus International, Inc. bought the division for $40. 1 million USD. Bucyrus eventually absorbed the Marion division ' s products into their product line, and closed the Marion, Ohio, plant. The Marion Power Shovel brand lives on however, as Bucyrus, honors and provides technical service and support for the Marion brand machines that are still active.

Many of the Marion Power Shovel Company ' s historical corporate files and archives are kept safe and on display at both the Bowling Green, Ohio ' s Historical Construction Equipment Association and the Marion County Historical Society in Marion, Ohio. The history of the Marion Steam Shovel Company and its subsequent journey through time may seem like a very local story on the surface. However, it ' s vital that the company ' s impact not be overlooked. Ultimately, the company and its founders, helped to shape the heavy construction industry across the country and around the world.

Our Country Is Changing

Family, we recurrently sign off our programs, articles, and chapters in our books with, We love you! And very ofttimes we sign off this column that way! But we are so filled with love for you, and from you in your erudition, it is tough to season from saying over and over also, We love you!

Today, as we knock out about our Popes down through the 2000 worth years of the history of our beloved Church, we find ourselves praising God for the gifts He has empty us in our Princes of our Church. We vision how very intertwined the world ' s history has been with the history of our Church.

Lately, we hear over and over besides, the words of the First Amendment - " Showdown shall make no law erotic an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; "

That has been interpreted incorrectly as separation of church and state. So lease us undarkened up something which has been distorted to greedy, Church is not to interfere with the ruling of our country. Reasonably our founding fathers never meant the restriction of religion, in matters of our country, but that of restrictions of the government in the matters of religion. To recite George Washington, first superior of the United States " Bona fide religion affords to government its surest stay. " And therefore John Adams, second luminary of the United States " Religion and consideration are the lone foundationsof republicanism and of all free governments. "

There has been a concerted cannonade of attacks down through the calendar of our Faith and that of all members of Christianity, to rub out the Appellation of Jesus in our lives, in our history.

At a Civic Day of Prayer breakfast on February 3, 1994, Walloping Teresa told the Congress of the United States, " if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? What does God have to do to get our attention?

We are the only country that I know of that has been consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of our Mother Mary, Jesus ' Mother. We are the only country founded under God! We hear on Television that our country is a leader in the world. It is said, when fault has to be made, " As goes the United States, so goes the world. " We see the deadly, destructive agenda of men and women who would rob us of our inalienable rights, the greatest of which being the right to believe in God.

From the very beginning of our country, just a little country at that time, where immigrants fled to have religious freedom, to believe in the one true God, they went through hell, suffering unbelievable deprivations to live in a land where they were free to worship! Our courts covet our First Amendment rights for the protection of pornographers, but not for our freedom of religion.

What do we say to them now!!

We want to share a thought we had about three years ago, when we saw the complexion of our country changing, the god of money and selfishness stealthily choking our nation of all moral values we and our ancestors treasured. One day, frustrated by the blaringly apparent, insidious agenda of chasing God out of the mainstream of our life, we turned to the Old Testiment, when Moses came down from the mountain and found Aaron and the rest of the Israelites worshiping a golden calf. We didn ' t know when or how it would come to pass, but we knew it could be the way our Lord would try to reach His children.

What golden calf? Well, it ' s not a calf but a bull! We must ask ourselves, have we been worshipping the stock market with its bull? You say you do not invest in the stock market. Well, I don ' t know about you, but it seems this mania of spending money faster than we could earn it, buying houses that we could not afford, the biggest, most expensive cars trading them in for the next year ' s model has taken over our society.

I really cannot share the blame, not because of my thrifty nature, but because I am a dispression baby and I saw how hard it was for my parents to bring in enough money to feed us children. Dinner time, they always passed on eating meat, saying they ' d had a big lunch. I thought they did not like meat as they always put potatoes or pasta, crowded with vegetables on their plates at dinner. But years later when times got better, and their plates took on a different raiment of color and assortment, I realized they had sacrificed for us children. Till today I have a problem throwing out leftovers we have failed to use fast enough.

We were poor, as most of our neighbors were; but I never felt poor! My father was out of work six years; my father, with a college education was one of the first to be laid off. Always partners, Mama went to work in a sweat shop, being paid pitifully little for piece work. I remember at the end of the Depression, going to visit my mother, for the first time, at the factory where she worked. I could hardly keep from crying! My mother and father never cried, never argued, never complained, blaming the government for the state of affairs. We and our neighbors never marched, except to honor our Lord and / or His Mother. Our summers were suffocatingly hot; ( there was no air conditioning in those days ) we and our neighbors sat on our porches, singing until the wee hours when it cooled down, following the passion and joy of the mandolins and the banjos plucking away.

We were poor; but no one spoke of it, or better yet complained. We were considered a minority - we were of Itallian descent. O. K. we worked harder, our parents insisted we go to school and earn honorary diplomas. We felt we had to work harder to be part of this great society ' s family. And we did! Why do I tell you of our time during the depression? So that anyone who thinks they can rob us of the freedoms we worked and scraped and suffered for, it aint gonna happen ( brooklyneze ).

We, Christians and Jews alike who grew up side by side, may look fat and contented like so many fat cows; but we are all turning to God and not only welcoming Him back, we are worshipping Him as He deserves. Each evening after we say our evening prayers, we find ourselves begging our Father in Heaven to forgive us our sins and give us back our Nation founded under God. Do not let godless elements who have taken over our state and federal government take away your freedoms. Fight for what you believe in. Vote them out of office. Pray to God to give us good, moral people to bring our country back to where we were when it all began. God bless you. We love you!
